The Largest Living Beings On Earth

Published on December 2, 2008 by admin

Author of the Dark Biology trilogy, Richard Preston wrote The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story, The Cobra Event, and The Demon in the Freezer which is about the bioterror possibilities of smallpox. His bio at TED.com says:

Richard Preston is one of the only humans to have climbed Hyperion, a nearly 380-foot redwood tree that is the tallest living thing on Earth. Hyperion was discovered by explorer Michael Taylor while Preston was writing his latest full-length book, The Wild Trees.

It would be interesting to know what Dr. Steve Sillett's impression is of this video.

Sillett emailed because of my page:

    http://www.mdvaden.com/grove_of_titans.shtml

Which makes available photos of the largest known coast redwoods, some climbed by Preston as well. Sillett's concern is that the redwoods not gain some kind of popularity or celebrity status.

Preston's talk, which also shows Lost Monarch the largest, is a far greater exposure and advertisement of this type of redwood titan.

I've wondered if Sillett contacts Preston behind the scenes about the showing and naming of the trees.

Myself - does not phase me. I think people should be able to see what they look like, especially since no maps are available.
